SHAKE-A-STICK (Ages 11-18)

AFTER-SCHOOL WORKSHOP

Learn the techniques that made youngsters become apprentices and great actors at the Globe Theatre in London when Shakespeare wrote plays for Queen Elizabeth and King James. In this after-school program, students plunge into a workshop of wonder, discovering how to embody the stories of the world’s greatest poet and playwright using mime, voice, text analysis and character portrayal.

Taught by Shakespeare Troupe Founder, Peter Galman and fellow ShakesTroupers who specialize in classical voice, movement and music. The novice classic actor is given a perspective on the belief systems of ancient cultures and social engineering of the Renaissance through which is found a connection to life today. Each student will take away a classic monologue to use in auditions. Family and friends may appreciate a performance when the group is ready.

18-WEEK COURSE, $400

INSTRUCTOR: Peter Galman was born in Chicago, trained under a scholarship at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, and with graduate studies under legendary teacher Stella Adler. After beginning his professional career with Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival, he appeared regularly as the troubled Tom Hughes on the daytime serial “As the World Turns” for five years while moonlighting on Broadway and off-Broadway in New York. After a hiatus away from his art to raise a family on Long Island, he returned to his passion and joined the ensemble of the Actors Shakespeare Company of Jersey City, New Jersey, where he played many roles, including Prospero, Claudius, Lear, Bottom, and Shylock. It was there he developed his exploration of First Folio text and gained teaching artist experience in the ASC school programs. His earliest Shakespeare roles were in the early summer seasons of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, where he developed vocal projection skills and rapier and dagger stage fighting techniques.

In commemoration of the global occurrence Shakespeare 400, Peter founded the Shakespeare Troupe of South Florida in April 2016. He has fostered all of the many events where actors of Shakespeare Troupe have appeared, including the weeklong World of Shakespeare Workshop in March 2017 at the Cushman School in Miami, and the 2018-19 Florida tour of dozens of schools, venues, and cultural centers, reaching 10,000 audience members, many new to Shakespeare.

As an actor for hire in Florida, Peter has appeared at many of Florida’s prestigious stages in just the last few years. He’s won a Silver Palm and Carbonell awards in acting and was named Best Actor 2016 by the Miami New Times.
