About the event

Peter Filichia's fresh look at William Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice turns the problematic character of Shylock into a portrait of redemption, as the Moneylender struggles against prejudice in Venice, Italy to find his faith in forgiveness and familial love. The staged reading features members of the Shakespeare Troupe of South Florida with Yiddishkayt Initiative Founder Avi Hoffman in the title role. The talkback explores the circumstances under which Shakespeare wrote such a harsh treatment of Jews and Christians and proposes some theories about the playwright’s identity.

Shakespeare Troupe of South Florida makes its inaugural appearance at Soref JCC at Plantation. Grace Arts Center is proud to participate in 'The Moneylender of Venice' reading through general programming support for theatre development via Florida Division of Arts and Culture and Broward County Cultural Division.
